With over 20 percent of its GDP coming from the oil and gas sector, it would be understandable for Alberta to see the global shift towards zero-emission energy carriers like electricity and hydrogen as an existential threat. But the energy transition is also an economic opportunity—one the province is well-positioned to capitalize on.

Alberta is already responsible for about two-thirds of Canada’s total hydrogen production, and its geology and natural gas resources give it the potential to be among the world’s lowest-cost producers of low-greenhouse gas (GHG) hydrogen at scale. That insight led to the creation of the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub in early 2021 to begin exploring those opportunities, and to a series of initiatives aimed at developing all stages of a hydrogen value chain in the province, from production and transportation to storage and end-use demand.

Led by Dr. David Layzell, this webinar will explore the high-level lessons learned from those projects in the past four years, making a case for how the Calgary region is the next logical step in building an innovative, responsible, and prosperous hydrogen sector in Alberta.
